'The colours behind the inspiration' are those in Miss Mustard Seed's new line of designer Milk Paints and we are very happy to announce that all twelve are currently in transit to Apple Box Boutique.

We have been eagerly awaiting its arrival, and are SO excited that in just a few days all of us will be able to bring that inspiration to life!

We have a feeling this first order won't last long so we've made the full line of Milk Paint available for purchase in The Apple Cart, our online shop. That way all of our out-of-town customers can dream in colour too!

The biggest question has been, "when will it be in the boutique?" There is so much anticipation about rushing in to get some before the first shipment sells out that we asked for the green light to do something new... and today we get to share the happy news!

Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Reveal - Day 5

It's day 5, the last in our week of Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint reveals!  Today we will feature two more colours, bringing the grand total to 8 of the 12 this designer line will launch with.

Why just 8, you ask?  Because the focus of our reveal series was to share real-world projects using the paint, and Miss Mustard Seed is diligently working away on the other 4.  Oh, the anticipation!

In the meantime, lets get straight to it!

We thought we would wait until today to show you the very first colour created and then the most recent colour to have been photographed, and at the end of this post we'll give a sneak-peek of the final four colours!

As Miss Mustard Seed herself would put it, "Say Hello To..."

Shutter Gray

Shutter Gray was the first colour in Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint line. Just a touch of blue makes this a lovely cool grey, reminding Marian of a perfect set of chippy grey shutters she owns and loves.

The test piece is this French dresser -- gorgeous lines but very orange!

One of the coolest things about Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint is that you can leave the bonding agent out of the mix, allowing the painted piece to chip and 'wear' naturally.

It doesn't happen every time, in fact it can be downright unpredictable and not chip at all. We know this isn't for everyone, but for folks like us at Apple Box Boutique it is like Christmas... after painting, hit the sheets and wake up the next morning to some glorious shabby chicness!

Kitchen Scale

Miss Mustard Seed wrote:

Yeah, it’s hard to believe it’s the same piece, isn’t it?

Here’s why I named the color Kitchen Scale…

The color isn’t exactly the same.  My aqua has more green in it, but this scale was my inspiration.

I love how this paint finish turned out.  It only chipped in a few small places, but the entire finish had this wonderful texture.  You can see it if you look closely…

I decided to jazz up the dresser with some branches and blossoms.  I’ve enjoyed the decorative painting I’ve done lately and it seemed fitting for this piece.  It’s a very petite dresser, so it’s perfect for a little girl’s room or guest room.

It chipped just a little bit around one of the knobs.

Since it’s a busy pattern, I kept the decorative painting to the drawer fronts only."

OKAY!  We can breathe again ;)

If the first 8 colours look this fantastic, just imagine how the final 4 will look life-sized:

Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Reveal - Day 4

It is hard to believe that it is already day 4 of our 5-day Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint reveal!  This week is flying past, but we are having so much fun thinking up exciting projects to do with MMSMP that a new notebook is required!

Today's feature is a colour named after an item that we adore as much as Miss Mustard Seed does -- French enamel pitchers.  They are elusive in Canada, but oh so lovely!

Without further ado... introducing "French Enamel":

Marian (aka Miss Mustard Seed) decided to test it on this lovely dresser and we got a kick out of what she wrote about distressing... that is how distressing it is to wood lovers that people like us will paint a piece like this:

Here is what she wrote:

"(You can take a moment to revive the wood lover next to you who just passed out at the sight of this beautiful wood being painted.)  I know it was beautiful, but it wasn’t in great condition and needed to be fully refinished or painted.  So, I painted.  I do love and appreciate beautiful wood, so I did refinish the top.   I stripped it and wiped it down with two coats of Hemp Oil (an all natural product that will be carried in my line.)

The colors in my line are going to be named after things I love (like Shutter Gray) and this color is named after the French enamel pitchers that have always caught my eye. I own one, but was only able to afford it because the bottom is entirely rusted out."

  

This beautiful colour leaves us speechless, in part because it sent Leanne to the realtor's looking for something akin to a French country farmhouse... it can be very quiet around here when she's gone! ;)

Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Reveal - Day 3

Welcome to day 3 of Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint reveal at On The Apple Box.

On Monday, we focused on Flow Blue and yesterday highlighted Mustard Seed Yellow and Lucketts Green.  In our original announcement about the boutique carrying MMSMP we included a Reimagined Monday feature on Tricycle.  Today...

Get ready for Typewriter!

One of Marian's (aka Miss Mustard Seed) favourite decorating elements is vintage fans.  While the black on those lovely old pieces is just the right colour, the name 'fan' wasn't quite working for her. Instead, she called this paint colour "Typewriter" after another fantastic vintage item most often found in shades of black. 

We agree that it feels just right!  Here is Miss Mustard Seed's take on painting with "Typewriter":

"Introducing this color was tricky for me because I don’t usually paint pieces entirely black.  It looks too heavy to me and I think you lose a lot of the detail of the piece.  So, I decided to leave the drawers wood, paint the body black and add a little decorative painting to the front.

Here’s how the dresser started…

Those stripes are contact paper.  I was about to rip them to shreds (figuratively) for being so ugly, but then I realized it was really pretty clever.  They applied a burled-looking contact paper in strips to look like inlay.  Ugly, but the idea is clever.  Very thrifty, too.  I pealed off the contact paper and went right to painting the body of the dresser.  Unfortunately, the stripes where the contact paper was showed through the paint, so I lightly sanded and applied a second coat.  That did the trick.  The front of the drawers were pretty gunky, so I stripped them to expose the pretty wood.

I chalked out a decorative design on the drawer fronts and painted in the details.  I didn’t want to heavily distress this piece, so I just lightly sanded the edges with a sanding sponge.  I didn’t do any prep work or add the bonding agent and the paint didn’t flake on this one.  You just never know!  I finished with my furniture wax, which turned the charcoal-looking paint to a soft black.

 

 

 

 

This was a fun piece and I love how it turned out."

Reimagined Monday: Miss Mustard Seed's "Flow Blue"

A few weeks ago we announced that we will be carrying Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint (MMSMP).  The time is fast approaching and it will soon be on our shelves and available from Apple Box Boutique online, plus we will be offering classes to help everyone get the knowledge to start on projects using this unique paint.

In the meantime, we will dream through Miss Mustard Seed's projects!  All this week we will be highlighting the fantastic selection of MMSMP colours  and today on Reimagined Monday we are sharing a dresser makeover by MMS owner Marian using one of our early favourites : Flow Blue.

Yes, you heard us squeal like little girls!

 It’s time for another reveal of one of my Milk Paint colors. Here’s Flow Blue…

This is how the piece looked before I painted it..

...and this is how it looked with two coats of paint, some detail painting and before I refinished the top.  This is the part where I was not in love with it and was ready to start all over…

…but then I refinished the top and sanded the finish to soften it…

…and it all worked out.  (Do you know that’s pretty common for me?  There’s almost always a moment of doubt or a time when I think the piece looks terrible, but I press through and it always seems to work out.)

The name of the color come from the technique used in the 1800′s – early 1900′s to transfer blue patterns onto pottery.  Flow Blue dishes have a beautiful blurry look to them and are in a varrying shades of a rich blue…

The rich blue I created for the milk paint line reminds me of flow blue dishes, so I thought the name was fitting.  Flow Blue milk paint is somewhere between royal and navy and has some green undertones.  It’s bright, but classic.  I love the way this color looks when it’s distressed and paired with dark woods.
