This Weekend: Celebrate Heritage Day in Alberta!

The Servus Heritage Festival is the place to be during the August long-weekend. Nestled in Edmonton’s scenic river valley, bordered by lush ravines and the North Saskatchewan River, the Festival draws visitors from around the Edmonton capital region and across the continent to spend some time sampling the tastes, smells, sights, and sounds of a diverse array of cultures.

Servus Heritage Festival 2013 marks the 38th annual edition of this premier three-day showcase of Canada’s vibrant multicultural heritage. Featuring 60 pavilions representing over eighty-five cultures from all over the world. Sample culinary delicacies, see creative performances, shop for crafts, artwork, and clothing, or chat with people eager to tell you a little about their cultural roots and their present-day communities in Canada.

We are proud to present a celebration of Canada’s renowned multicultural spirit in an atmosphere of tolerance. In spite of events that may be taking place on the international stage, local cultural associations have the foresight to look beyond sometimes centuries-old disagreements, co-exist peacefully for three days in the idyllic setting of Edmonton’s River Valley, and share with visitors, and with each other, those traditions that make their people unique.

Come Enjoy! in Hawrelak Park August 3rd , August 4th , & August 5th

If you are a first-time visitor or a long-time resident, there are activities for everyone to enjoy this Canada Day. From arts and culture to sports and the outdoors, Canada’s Festival City will provide residents and visitors alike with the ultimate Canada Day experience.

The Alberta Aviation Museum will be open with visiting aircraft on display, the Vintage Wings of Canada member rides and for the Children, the local Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will be holding a Free (other than museum admission) Young Eagles day where children between 8 and 16 years will get a flight in a light aircraft, courtesy of the EAA.

Celebrate Canada Day in one of the prettiest settings around, at the Devonian Botanic Garden. Outdoor art displays in the Main Garden, musical entertainment, crafts and games for the kids, Canada Day cake! All activities are free with regular admission.

Grab your bandana and bring the kids to an eco-tourism adventure and on-farm festival complete with Canada Day fun, farm tours, a wild west ghost town, wagon rides, gem mining & more! The Canada Day Kids Fest at Prairie Gardens & Adventure Farm is the perfect way to kick-start summer holidays on the Canada Day long weekend.

Enjoy great food, entertainment, and live performances by Alberta based artists at one of Alberta’s top Canada Day destinations, the Alberta Legislature.  Geared for all ages, the performances will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. across three stages. New this year is a special children’s only area with its own stage. Beat the heat with a splash in the wading pools or by touring the Legislature Building during the annual Open House.

The annual Silly Summer Parade mixes Canada Day spirit with twisted humour and good old-fashioned fun. This fun filled afternoon features family activities, entertainment, a fundraising Bar-B-Que and of course Canada Day cake.

There is plenty to take in at the various City attractions too!  Celebrate Canada Day and the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s 52nd birthday!  Enjoy lively jazz with Six Feet Up, Canada crafts, planting activities, face painting and lots of family fun at the Muttart Conservatory.  Join the park-wide celebration of Dominion Day with a great variety show at Fort Edmonton Park.  Enjoy the live entertainment, crafts, face painting and petting zoo at City Hall and don't forget the fireworks!  This year’s display is going to be bigger and better than ever before as Edmonton will be launching the biggest fireworks shell in Canada - don’t miss it!

Be sure to check out Celebrate Canada Day to find out firework viewing locations, road closures, and more about the other planned activities.

In April: The Works of Renowned Canadian Artist Joseph Cross

At the boutique, one of the very important self-imposed mandates... we like to call it our joy... is to highlight local and Canadian artists, musicians, designers and the like whenever we have the opportunity.  In this case we are overjoyed!

I have been a huge fan of artist Joseph Cross for years.  Working from his studio in Cranbrook, B.C., he manages to capture the imagination through his perspective on how we live and have lived.  His range is inspired, painting environments, people and depicting historic events in a way that makes one feel a part of the time and space they took place in.

Joseph is a "true red and white Canadian" with a love for his country and the people who inhabit it.  Everyday events and objects come to life through his paintbrush and we couldn`t be happier to share his vision.  We are very excited to announce that Apple Box Boutique will carry three limited edition prints that fit exceedingly well with our cottage-chic/shabby-chic decor options.

Each piece is signed and numbered, and has a story of its own.  Stop in at the boutique in April to view them first-hand, and learn more about their origins. Then make one your very own.

To see more of Joseph`s artwork, visit his website at JosephCrossArt.com.  Be prepared to be inspired!
